Where young Australians discover how elections – and their voices – shape the nation.
The National Electoral Education Centre (NEEC), housed within the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD), is a dedicated learning environment designed to give young Australians a deeper understanding of democracy, elections, and the role of the Australian Electoral Commission. Refurbished and redesigned by E2, the NEEC creates a series of engaging, interactive, and simulated spaces aligned with the Australian Curriculum to support Civics and Citizenship learning outcomes for Years 5–6, while also extending to secondary students, adults, and community groups.
The visitor journey unfolds across a suite of purpose-built spaces: a Foyer that reveals the process of calling a federal election; a Theatrette that uses film and interpretive media to explain Australia’s democratic system, Constitution, and referendums; an Activity Space – “Democracity” – a gamified environment (developed with MonkeyStack) where visitors learn through play about enrolment, nominations, voting options, misinformation, and referendums; and a Polling Space, where hands-on workshops guide participants through the act of voting, scrutiny, and counting.
Designed to demystify the electoral process, the NEEC gives students and visitors a first-hand experience of how democracy works in practice. By blending simulation, gamification, and immersive storytelling, the centre empowers the next generation of Australians to understand their rights, responsibilities, and opportunities as active participants in the Australian democracy.
