A creative hub where hands-on making sparks the future of Australian innovation

Housed within the heritage-listed former Royal Australian Mint administration building in Canberra, the Questacon Technology Learning Centre (QTLC) is a dynamic creative hub designed to ignite curiosity and inspire future innovators by engaging the community with science and technology. Aimed primarily at secondary school students, the centre combines hands-on learning with immersive design to bring the maker movement to life.

E2’s design approach celebrates honest, intuitive detailing—with exposed joints, rivets and screws creating a tactile environment that reflects the very spirit of making. Sustainable, approachable materials define flexible spaces dedicated to participation, interactivity and experimentation. At the heart of the centre, the Live Area functions as a collaborative hub, with breakout zones and meeting areas that feel like part of a living exhibit. Supergraphics inspired by Heath Robinson’s whimsical machine illustrations add a playful yet instructive layer, reinforcing the spirit of creativity and innovation.

Supporting a range of learning outcomes, the Activity Space, Prototyping Room and Exhibition Space transform into live workshops where students can experiment, collaborate, and explore through self-directed education, group analysis, and hands-on projects. Colour-based wayfinding graphics replace traditional signage, guiding visitors through bold, laser-like stripes that animate the floors and walls to shape movement and spatial identity. The result is a flexible, inspiring environment that not only supports half-day workshops and in-depth learning but positions the QTLC as a vital hub for fostering the next generation of Australian innovators.
